Legion abnett5/29/2023 ![]() ![]() ![]() The Armour of Contempt - How exactly did Colonel-Commisar Gaunt and his people not turn traitor while on occupied Gereon? Simple: they shielded their souls w/ the armor of contempt. On Anacreon Sextus, an ancient world w/ structures so massive they could only be monuments to the God-Emperor of Mankind, the Ghosts have to make do w/out Gaunt's leadership while the Archenemy attacks here & there, hideous monsters stalk them at night, and entrepreneurs turn a buck wherever they can. The Tanith First and Only were disbanded, no longer Gaunt's Ghosts, and rolled into the 81st Belladon. The idea that he and his men could return from a Chaos-occupied planet w/out any taint of Chaos is heresy, and the Inquisition is not pleased. His Last Command - Gaunt was gone for so long, he and his men were assumed dead and the mission a failure. Gaunt has to adapt to weapons and enemies he hasn't seen anywhere else, with almost no support, while Chaos space marines nip at their heels. Local conditions are horrific as the planet and populace are bled dry to feed the Archenemy's campaign. Traitor General - Gaunt and comrades infiltrate the Archenemy-occupied planet of Gereon to assassinate the titular character. Don't worry, the rest of the series will wait. If you're not familiar w/ Warhammer 40k, start w/ The Founding. If you read those reviews, you know I'm going to slap 5 stars on the book and slobber all over the author. ![]() ![]() I already reviewed The Founding and The Saint omnibuses. ![]()

Hope Was Here by Joan Bauer5/28/2023 ![]() She taught me the importance of stories and laughter. ![]() My grandmother, who I called Nana, had the biggest influence on me creatively. That, and the fact that I was overweight and very tall, all made me feel quite different when I was growing up-a bit like a musk ox at a tea party. But I had a mother with a great comic sense (she was a high school English teacher) and a grandmother who had been a funny professional storyteller, so I figured the right genes were in there somewhere, although I didn't always laugh at what my friends laughed at and they rarely giggled at my jokes. This, however, was a difficult concept to get across in first grade. While my friends made their career plans, declaring they would become doctors, nurses, and lawyers, inwardly I knew that I wanted to be involved somehow in comedy. I thought that people who could make other people laugh were terribly fortunate. I've always believed in comic entrances.Īs I grew up in River Forest, Illinois, in the 1950's, I seem to remember an early fascination with things that were funny. JI was born at eleven A.M., a most reasonable time, my mother often said, and when the nurse put me in my mother's arms for the first time I had both a nasty case of the hiccups and no discernible forehead (it's since grown in). ![]()

The heart principle book5/28/2023 ![]() ![]() It may not look like much compared to the jewel-encrusted treasure on display elsewhere, but this spoon is the oldest and one of the most sacred items in the whole ceremony. ![]() Royal Trust Collection / His Majesty King Charles III 2023 Coronation spoon The coronation spoon has two indentations, suggesting it was made for the archbishop to dip two fingers into holy oil to anoint the sovereign. The name Stone of Scone comes not from the baked treat but from Scone Palace - the historic crowning place of Scottish kings just outside Perth in central Scotland. It has iron rings attached to either end, but historians don’t agree on why. It is composed of pinkish sandstone and has a cross roughly marked into it. ![]() The stone itself is surrounded by mystery. In 1996, Prime Minister John Major moved it permanently from Westminster to Edinburgh Castle, where it still resides until it’s used for coronations. ![]() It appeared three months later on the altar of Arbroath Abbey in western Scotland, before it was put back under the coronation chair in 1952. It stood for centuries in Westminster Abbey, until four Scottish students stole it on Christmas Day 1950, prompting a huge manhunt. The somewhat unremarkable-looking 336-pound stone has ever since been used to crown monarchs of England and later Britain. ![]()

Grave Sight by Charlaine Harris5/28/2023 ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() When Charlaine began to realize that neither of those series was ever going to set the literary world on fire, she regrouped and decided to write the book she’d always wanted to write. The books, set in Shakespeare, Arkansas, feature a heroine who has survived a terrible attack and is learning to live with its consequences. Soon Charlaine was looking for another challenge, and the result was the much darker Lily Bard series. Her first Teagarden, Real Murders, garnered an Agatha nomination. After a child-producing sabbatical, Charlaine latched on to the trend of series, and soon had her own traditional mystery books about a Georgia librarian, Aurora Teagarden. The resulting two stand-alones were published by Houghton Mifflin. After holding down some low-level jobs, her husband Hal gave her the opportunity to stay home and write. Though her early output consisted largely of ghost stories, by the time she hit college (Rhodes, in Memphis) Charlaine was writing poetry and plays. Charlaine lives in Texas now, and all of her children and grandchildren are within easy driving distance. ![]() A native of the Mississippi Delta, she grew up in the middle of a cotton field. Charlaine Harris has been a published novelist for over thirty-five years. ![]() |
