Light from uncommon stars reviews5/28/2023 ![]() ![]() ![]() Tagged on the front cover as a “transformative marvel” by author TJ Klune ( The House in the Cerulean Sea), Light From Uncommon Stars is one those superlative books that is so good and so impactful that you walk away from it changed in vitally important ways.Īt first glance, you might wondering if that’s where you’re going to emotionally land since the narrative that underpins the novel is one of the most imaginatively quirky ones you’ve likely come across. The world, nay the galaxy is a big, messily wonderful and diverse place and it’s a joy to see it reflected in the pages of Light From Uncommon Stars by Ryka Aoki, a vigorously alive novel that takes a brilliantly out-there premise and runs with it in ways that will delight, unsettle and make you supremely glad you are alive to read it. ![]()

![]() ![]() ![]() In chapter 1, Gibson examines the text of the Lord’s Prayer-in both its Greek and English forms. ![]() The remainder of the volume answers those questions. Gibson’s aim is laid out clearly in the Introduction when he writes “hen we pray the prayer Jesus taught ‘us’ to pray, are we really praying it as Jesus intended us to pray it? Is what we ask for when we petition God to let his name ‘be hallowed’ and his kingdom ‘come,’ and for bread and forgiveness and for not being led into ‘temptation,’ really what Jesus thought and meant those he told to recite his words to be asking for?” (xii). This work also includes a conclusion and an appendix, which is titled “Was John the Baptist the Author of the Disciples’ Prayer?” Gibson’s The Disciples’ Prayer: The Prayer Jesus Taught in Its Historical Setting is a recent entry in the lengthy line of studies by Gibson consisting of six chapters. The so-called “Lord’s Prayer” has been the subject of numerous books and essays spanning the history of the Church. ![]()

Doomed to Succeed by Dennis Ross5/27/2023 ![]() ![]() They are calling it over-the-top – and premature. ![]() Auston’s in.”The reveling drew the mockery of the rest of a nation that loves to hate the Leafs. One of the chain’s billboards cheekily reads: “Boston’s out. The popular Canadian franchise Boston Pizza unofficially changed its name to Auston Pizza, a nod to Leafs superstar Auston Matthews (and the fact that highly touted rival Boston infamously lost in Round 1). “I didn’t think we’d ever do it.”One tattoo shop is offering a promotion for the Maple Leaf logo. For the largest city in hockey-obsessed Canada, the two-decade string of playoff futility was at turns darkly comic and tragic but always a subject of deep civic angst.Yesterday’s game was like the first sunny, balmy day after a dark Canadian winter. Instead, it was only the first game of Round 2 of the playoffs – the quarterfinals. So why all the fuss? It was the first time in 19 years that the Maple Leafs made it even this far. But the crowd was exultant, their faces smeared blue as they cheered on their Maple Leafs amid the high-rises of downtown Toronto. The unknowing would be forgiven for thinking Tuesday night’s game was to clinch hockey’s famous Stanley Cup. It was unseasonably cold, with a miserable rain that hadn’t let up for days. ![]()

In my room saul leiter5/27/2023 ![]() ![]() With In My Room, Leiter ushers viewers into his private world while retaining his strong sense of mystery. Leiter preferred solitude in life, and resisted any type of explanation or analysis of his work. There will be an opening reception at the gallery on May 10 from 6 until 8pm. The prolific Leiter, who painted and took pictures fervently up to his death, worked in relative obscurity well into his eighties. On Thursday, May 10, Saul Leiter’s show In My Room will open at Howard Greenberg Gallery in New York City, running until June 30, 2018. Leiter, who was also a painter, incorporates abstract elements into these photographs and often shows the influence of his favorite artists, including Bonnard, Vuillard and Matisse. Now we are granted a first-time look at this body of work, which Leiter began on his arrival in New York in 1946 and chipped away at over the next two decades. In the 1970s, Leiter planned to make a book of his nudes, but never realized the project in his lifetime. Showing deeply personal interior spaces, often illuminated by the lush natural light of the artist’s studio in New York City’s East Village, these black-and-white images reveal the unique collaboration between Leiter and his subjects. Fed by thrilling recent discoveries from Saul Leiter’s vast archive, In My Room provides an in-depth study of the nude, through intimate photographs of the women Leiter knew. ![]()

The Memoirs by Hector Berlioz5/27/2023 ![]() ![]() I am now barely 100 pages into this screamer, after having recently concluded reading the magisterial and sympathetic two-volume biography of Berlioz by David Cairns (who also provides the perfect translation of these Memoirs). Well, add "The Memoirs of Hector Berlioz" to that short list. And how trenchantly - even scathingly - funny that particular work is, even to the point where some folks have fun citing extended passages at will, out loud, just for the "yuks" it contains. ![]() Anyone familiar with the works of Oscar Wilde will of course know where the "take-off" above comes from. ![]()
